π Complete Voter Guide
- Visit the official portal: voters.eci.gov.in
- Click on "New Voter Registration" (Form 6)
- Fill in personal details, address, and upload required documents.
- Required documents: Aadhaar card, age proof (birth certificate/10th mark sheet), address proof (utility bill/passport), and a recent passport-size photo.
- Submit the form and save the reference number to track your status.
- Once approved, your Voter ID (EPIC card) will be delivered to your registered address via post.
- EVM (Electronic Voting Machine): A secure device used to cast votes electronically, replacing paper ballots.
- How to use: Press the blue button next to the name and symbol of your chosen candidate. A red light will glow, and you will hear a long beep confirming your vote.
- VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail): An independent verification system attached to the EVM.
- How VVPAT works: After you press the button, a paper slip containing the serial number, name, and symbol of the candidate is printed and remains visible behind a transparent window for 7 seconds before falling into a sealed drop box.
- Security: EVMs are standalone machines, not connected to the internet, making them immune to online hacking.
- What it is: A set of guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India for political parties and candidates during elections to ensure free and fair polling.
- When it applies: It comes into force the moment the election schedule is announced and remains in effect until the results are declared.
- Prohibitions: Hate speech, bribing voters, using government resources for campaigning, announcing new financial grants, or laying foundation stones of projects.
- Reporting violations: Citizens can report violations using the cVIGIL app or by calling the 1950 voter helpline.
- Lok Sabha (General Elections): Citizens vote to elect Members of Parliament (MPs) to the lower house. The party/coalition with a majority (272+ out of 543 seats) forms the Central Government and chooses the Prime Minister. Held every 5 years.
- State Assembly (Vidhan Sabha): Citizens vote to elect Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs). The majority forms the State Government and chooses the Chief Minister.
- Rajya Sabha: The upper house of Parliament. Members are indirectly elected by MLAs, not directly by citizens.
- Local Body Elections: Elections for Municipal Corporations (urban) and Panchayats (rural).
- Presidential Election: Indirect election by an electoral college consisting of elected MPs and MLAs.
- Meaning: "None Of The Above"
- Introduction: Introduced in 2013 following a Supreme Court order to give voters the right to register a negative opinion.
- How to vote: It is the last button on the EVM panel, marked with a specific symbol.
- Impact: NOTA votes are counted but do not affect the election result. Even if NOTA gets the highest votes, the candidate with the next highest votes is declared the winner.
- Significance: It empowers citizens to send a strong message of dissatisfaction to political parties regarding the quality of candidates fielded.
- You must carry an approved ID document to cast your vote.
- Primary ID: Voter ID card (EPIC).
- Alternative IDs (if you don't have EPIC): Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, Driving License, Indian Passport, MGNREGA Job Card, Passbooks with photo issued by Bank/Post Office, Smart Card issued by RGI under NPR, Health Insurance Smart Card (Ministry of Labour), Pension Document with photo, Official ID cards issued to MPs/MLAs/MLCs, or Service ID Cards with photograph issued by Central/State Govt/PSUs.
- Note: Voter slips distributed by political parties are not accepted as valid ID. Only the official voter information slip along with one of the above IDs is acceptable.
